From my experience, MS firewall is sufficient protection. It may not be the end all that is all but it works well enough. You do need anti-virus software and anti-spyware software on your system. SO McAfee AV %26 MS anti-spyware are good starting points. I would probably recommend getting yourself a copy of Web roots Spysweeper. MS Anti-spyware is good but again not the end all that is all. SpySweeper (along with adware) picks up alot of the slack.

Hopefully this helps.

I would use both - unless they have conflicts, then I would use McAfee only - McAfee does Virus scan software and related programs (including firewall), Microsoft has their hands full with Windows, Office, Visual Studio, etc. I don't trust their firewall software.
You really didn't say if it was McAfee Anti-Virus or McAfee Firewall that you have. If it is McAfee Firewall then disable the XP Firewall as they may conflict.

If XP Firewall is the only firewall you are using I would suggest that you replace it with with the free version of Zone-Alarm. Availible from:
