Zone Alarm Security Suite verses Norton Systemworks?

I've been using Norton System works for many years now and it has done a decent job at protecting many of my computes. I also use Zone Alarm Pro for my software firewall. That's a great product also.

However, recently Norton System Works has been giving me errors saying my Zone Alarm Pro is not working. But, Zone Alarm is working fine. I've contact Symantec's support and I'm not happy with their solutions. Norton gives me these big red alert boxes and X's that are always displayed if it 'seemingly' finds a problem with other software it monitors.

I'm getting a bit fed-up with Norton. It's a resource hog, red errors always being displayed, very poor technical support too, unless I pay for it. On the other hand, Zone Alarm Security Suite now includes anti-virus protection, plus a great firewall.

Should I dump Norton? Zone Alarm Internet Suite also allows you to use their program on up to 3 separate computers! I hate to leave Norton, but maybe it's time to.

Welcome to the club! I dumped Norton for the same lame responses as yourself. I now use Kaspersky and am thrilled with it. Picks up almost everything and instead of looking for errors in other programmes, it gives you the options.

The good thing about Zone alarm, is it has a pretty good stand alone virus package as well as good security backup. I think it is good to try other "equally good" products for a while anyway. So do yourself a favour.

I had many of the same problems you are having with Norton. Problem is, unless you are somebody like Bill Gates or the like, Norton is almost impossible to completely delete. It always seems to imbed itself in some system files, ready to spring back when you least suspect it. Don't get me wrong, I think Norton is a good product. Nevertheless, I use PCcillin now. I also like AVG, especially because they seem to have a very good free version.

In addition to the other items, if you go to AOL and sign up, I believe that they will provide you, gratis, a full suite of tools - Anti-virus, anti-adware, etc. To be completely thorough - you should use more than one tool.
AVG is free forever. (Until They Decide It Shouldnt be Anymore)
Trend Micro makes an online virus scanned called House Call. It's available at housecall.trendmicro.com/ and you run it in the browser using Java. It's good if you don't want to install a big AV program or if you suspect a virus has corrupted your AV program.

don't! when you look for cracks for software you are becoming vulnerable to even more attacks like spyware, trojans, etc. just use Adaware SE Personal and Spybot Search and Destroy. both are free and highly recommended. both can be found at the below website by searching.

right click/ double click on your antivirus on the bottom right corner select through the options or prefrences menu either turn off the problem program or go looking for the blocked content and change it to allowed I could be more help doing that but you never mentioned which programs you are using.

My modem keeps beeping...what does this mean?

I have a desktop Compaq Presario S4000V that was purchased in 2003. Within the last few months, I've noticed that the modem beeps frequently during my usage of the computer. That beeping is your computer telling you something is wrong. If it is an overheating problem, check the fans are working and as suggested above some air to dust it out. Do it outside,( from experience ) as the dust will be un-believable.

something could be telling you it is over heating. try taking off your cover with the computer off and unplugged and blowing all the dust out. a can of compressed air from any hardware, wal-mart, or automotive store and a 1" wide very soft paint brush do the job well. the heatsinks (metal things) collect a lot of dust and your processors get very warm.

No its not Norton is rubbish its full of flaws. I would highly reccommend Zone Alarm. Its has internet secuity including virus protection and firewall. You simply cannot beat it.

Using Linux rather than Windows is the best free internet security software.
LOL Everyone has their choice of anti-virus software, personally I like Norton, have never had a problem with it and it has saved me from viruses many times... its all a matter of ones opinion. Use what is right for you, do some research and choose, anything is better than nothing and you can always change to something better. Do keep in mind though (regardless of what everyone raves) You do get what you pay for, FREE is just that. One with a good firewall is a great idea also.

Okay here goes, I have completely erased my hard drive, re-installed the OS, acquired all of the necessary updates for the OS. Installed updates for the drivers i need, have AVG 7.5 anti virus protection running. I run scan disk on it and keep temporary internet files deleted, cookies dumped, and analyze my hard drive once a week for a defrag and do it if needed.

My system runs sooooo slow even though i do all of these things.

I did a free registry scan and it shows almost 300 invalid registry items. Is there a way to remove these items without purchasing a new program?

I have a computer problem...Can someone plz help me?

I am new to the internet and to computers so I have no idea what is going on. When I am on the net sometimes my computer will all of a sudden pop up and say Microsoft Internet Explorer Error and have a screen that says Report problem or Don't send Report. Do you sign out when done browsing the internet? If so that will override the selection to keep me signed in. Also if you shut down your computer that will do it too. Sometimes the firewall ,antivirus,popup blocker will change the way a computer operats. Also if you have downloaded service pack 2 from MS there have been problems with how the computer operates. Also if you happen to have 2 different antivirus programs or firewall programs conflicts arrise and may even lock you out of your system all together. I know for one that firefox will reset your operating system too, I don't know if mozilla will or not but it's a good bet it will.

For my graduation present into high-school my parents are getting me a laptop, considering one cannot survive high-school without one.

I'm no whizz regarding the technical side of computers,but when I'm on sites such as yahoo answers for example,after about an hour or so,I lose the site and a sign comes up at the very top of the screen saying "cannot find server" Havn't a clue what that means or why it happens!

In order for me to go on to any site after this has occured,including checking emails and even my home page,I either have to reboot or restart my pc and start from scratch.

Hi tinyfeet, listen in this case when this happens there are 2 possibilities one of them for sure is the problem :

1- this problem from the Modem or the router, sometimes the software of the modem or the router get damaged and I dont mean by the software , the software that u install it from the CD, No, Its the software of the modem it self from inside.

any way in this case if u can tell me ur modem Model (linksys or Speedtouch or netgear or whatever the model)

2- a problem from the DSL, I mean a problem from the ISP (Internet Service Provider) so in this case u should call them and tell them about the problem that u r having and they will check the connection for U, if there is a problem from their connection they will fix it from their side

LimeWire connect problem?

Right well I can't connect to LimeWire for some strange reason and i don't know what it is. I have always been able to connect in the past up until now. I have not installed any new software to make this happen. I have Zone Alarm as a firewall and AVG as anti virus protection, these have never been a problem before, even so i still turned them off and it still doesn't work. Also Windows firewall is turned off, yet LimeWire says a firewall is detected with them all off.

It's a problem with one of the files in the limewire application pack.

In XP: enable viewing of hidden and system files go to the Tools

menu in Explorer, then Folder Options, and in the View tab set it to show hidden files and folders and system files.

Once you've changed those setting you can find the

folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Application Data\LimeWire"

Vista users: C:\Users\name you use to login\AppData\Roaming\Limewire

Make sure limewire is fully closed before the next step...

In limewire delete the gnutella.net file and replace it with a new one.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the the web ..I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

If you have xp you can do a recovery, or backup. You should not get a new computer due to a virus though. Just get a friend that knows computers to fix it. It will save you lots of money. I would also recommend you call bellsouth again, perhaps the tech you talked to on the phone was new or had to go use the restroom and just lied and said you had a virus and could not wait on the phone long...

I have this computer (OS win 98)at work which does not literally do anything. It gets stuck on every application. I guess you should upgrade the hardware itself. Maybe the reason why you can't install WinXP is because you lack the minimum hardware requirements to run it in your PC.

Check your specs, if its lower than the recommended requirements (not the minimum), try upgrading for your XP run, at least, at a tolerable level.

First get a BOOTABLE windows XP CD and insert it into ur Cd-rom.

Now change the first boot option to " Boot from CD" from settings by pressing del at system startup

Follow the instructions.

It will ask u to select the drive on which the windows will be installed. Make sure u first format ur all the drives before installing the new windows.

u can select the option " Format using NTFS (quick)".

And just let the installation process to complete.
try a system restoration from an earlier time when you didnt have the virus.

I have a 5 year old desktop, Compaq Presario with Windows XP Home Edition. Because of the fact that we had some pretty bad virus and add-ware protection in the past, now, it slow as hell, and it's constantly showing various odd error messages. I've tried a hundred different things, downloading new anti-virus software, defragmenting the main drives, running Spybot Search %26 Destroy like a hundred times, and it has improved the situation very little. I don't have a recovery disc or anything like that for it, so I can't just wipe everything and re-install it again. My question is, is it possible for me to somehow completely reset the computer, I don't care if everything's lost, I'll back up the information, I just need to make it run faster, and MAKE IT WORK! For me the only option that seems possible now is to somehow completely wipe out everything and reset it. Can someone tell me how I would go about doing that without having to buy another Windows XP copy?

There should be a recovery partition on a Compaq, unless it was deleted. On all my Compaq's it is the d: drive. There is a boot option on system start (F8 I believe). You can also run msconfig.exe to look at the boot.ini file and change the default boot device.

Earlier I downloaded a program called Speed Optimizer and I had to pay for the trial so I didnt want to pay. I looked for a program called a keygen and ended up getting a virus. The virus opens up mulitple webpages every other minute to a website called bestmanage or something. I need to figure out how to remove it. My Anti-Virus/Anti-Spy prog is AT%26T Yahoo Online Protection. Its not the best virus search%26destroy because it takes forever to locate. And you got to manually delete the viruses which are still running on your HD which you cant delete a running prog so it doesnt work. . . Any answers?

If you have the Antiverims thing, do a seach for SMITFRAUDFIX in google and download the fix. You will have to reboot into safe mode to run the fix. Otherwise here are some good resources.

If the pop ups appear when you're online, activate your browsers pop up blocker. Go to tools - internet options - block pop ups.

But if they appear on your pc when you're not connected to the net then you have either spyware or adware on your pc. Run Spybot S%26D and Ad-Aware SE Personal to get rid of them.

Where I didn`t expected. In some files like : "intcodec" (a codec) , "antispam" , other. I cannot delet them. What shall I do? I have the AT%26T Yahoo! Online Protection Anti-Virus software and I just scanned my computer for viruses a while ago and it said that I have 16 infected files!

There are two faces of a free software: it can be a FREEware or an Evaluation Copy.

I was a special projects tech and pc support specialist at a University for 3 years which forced me into writing my own software, so I could stop wasting my time repeating myself with cleanups, etc. I agree, if people kept things up to date and at least used basic prevention/detection software, 50%+ of the problems wouldn't occur.

Man, I hear ya. About 50% of the problems are just that, the rest are because they don't speedread well enough to know what the tutorials say.
If people kept their Windows and all their other software 100% patched and updated, the need for anti-virus software would fall by 75%, I would bet.
The main problem is not viruses and spyware, but operating systems that were never designed from the beginning to incorporate security.

There ARE operating systems out there that were designed from the ground up to be secure (*BSD, UNIX, LINUX, Mac OS X, etc.).

If you have just joined BT ( I assume you have with your free Norton), best to do a full restore of your computer with the Restore disc supplied with your PC. I did this after switching to BT, which ensured I was starting afresh with no remnants of old anti-virus/spyware software or any other downloaded stuff for that matter. Just back up your essential files to disk or flashdrive and away you go and wait for the Windows updates to re-install (will take about half an hour). Then install your BT software and everything should be straightforward from there. And if the Norton Auto-updates don't kick in straight away, just do it manually in the Norton Protection Centre section you will have downloaded. Good luck.

Im thinking about starting a computer repair sevice as a job on the side. Ive been trying to construck a list of services i can provide and what i need to provide to these services and just general things ill need. If any one can help me fill in the list or add to it that would be great. Im also not sure about pricing.

-Hardware installations and replacements-just tools to open up a computer case and take out old parts and install new ones

-spyware removal-Ill use AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition 7.5 or superantispyware.

-Virus removal-AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5

-software installation-

-transfer files to new computer-USB hardrive

-Set up of new computer-

-upgrade to vista-vista

-install virus protection software-AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5 or Norton Anti Virus

Other things i might need:

A system to test parts

Power Suply tester

if i uninstall the operating system,if the owner does not have the install disk for the operating system can i use mine%26purchase a cd key for them?

note superantispyware is crap ware. spybot 1.5 is better.

- Spare parts (graphic cards, audio, network cards, switch, usb's cables needed)

yes! absolutely, i works kool , even better than Norton antivurus that takes tons of HD space... i tried both but AT%26T pop-up bloker , anti-spam with the antivirus works amazing for me! i got no viruses ! even i u see them it will deleted them..

I stoped using Norton time ago, Norton brings lots of problems 2 the pc, if your memory ram is not that good, even Norton for Mac OS sucks ! well Macs do not need from antivirus, but i have a laptop and pc runing windows , and Norton is not my best choice! but i'm very happy with AT%26T on-line Protection.

I have AT%26T on my computers that has WindowXP and I like their protection very much. I wasn't able to get it yet on the computer that has Vista. I would recommend it highly. When they get it all ready for Vista I will probably change over to their protection.

along with this free software you get mail protection, parental controls,pop up blocker,anti spyware,norton ant virus and norton personal firewall how do you unistall the last three (Norton spyware Anti virus firewall) without unistalling the other ones(these are the ones that i dont want) but if you cant how on earth do you unistall all of it nothing works.
