How many of these computer problems could be solved if everyone had virus scanners and anti-spyware?

I'm half tempted to make a template message because half the problems on here are "I have a virus". Honestly, does anyone not know the internet is a dangerous place and that you need protection?

I was a special projects tech and pc support specialist at a University for 3 years which forced me into writing my own software, so I could stop wasting my time repeating myself with cleanups, etc. I agree, if people kept things up to date and at least used basic prevention/detection software, 50%+ of the problems wouldn't occur.

Now I know that some trojans and worms need a second glance or stinger software specially written for it, but those cases occur less than 2% of the time. So, even though Linux is safer and less troublesome, the average user needs Windows for their comfort level.

I've created a small template this week because I grew tired of typing the same answer over and over again, but this is getting ridiculous.

I agree with you.
Man, I hear ya. About 50% of the problems are just that, the rest are because they don't speedread well enough to know what the tutorials say.
If people kept their Windows and all their other software 100% patched and updated, the need for anti-virus software would fall by 75%, I would bet.
The main problem is not viruses and spyware, but operating systems that were never designed from the beginning to incorporate security.

There ARE operating systems out there that were designed from the ground up to be secure (*BSD, UNIX, LINUX, Mac OS X, etc.).
