Need to get rid of virus, what should I do?

I have a windll virus - and gods know what else on my other computer. It was my sister's and she got a new one, giving this to me. (used it in college to download tons of stuff)

What is the best FREE anti virus? Are there any free anti virus programs that do a good job?

I have a PC. If I must step up and buy protection, which is the best? Norton kept crashing my computer %26gt;=(

I'm also contemplating taking the computer somewhere to get the hard drive wiped clean and re-installing everything. How much should this cost?

Need to get rid of virus, what should I do?systemworks

If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

1. AVG Free

a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!

a. Real-time protection

b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir

a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

b. It's cute umbrella icon

c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

Cons: A very sluggish update

I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).

I have a computer virus. Can someone help me out?

I think I have a computer virus. I have SBC Yahoo DSL internet, and I have all the antivirus and online protection downloads. I use both often. My internet is slow, freezes up and I get pop ups ALOT. The anti virus software pops up telling me my computer is infected, but doesn't give me the option of deleting them. I don't want to have to completely restore the computer. Is there a software or something I can download that will get rid of the viruses and make my internet fast with no popups again?

Good laptop and printer needed for new college student?

i am gonna start college in the fall and i need to get a new laptop. and a printer. are there any good recomendations.

i was thinking of a sony vaio and i also saw a lenmark printer/scanner/copier/ect.

any other good recomendations and where can i get them at a good price. also any good recomendations for an anti-virus/spyware protection.

Good laptop and printer needed for new college student?vincent

It all depends on how much you want to spend.

I like all Sony Vaio's. I dont like Lexmark printers... but they are cheap!

Give me a price range and I can give you some best choices. Also, do you want ultra-portable and light weight, or more of a desktop replacement, which is heavy, but very powerful?

Good laptop and printer needed for new college student?adware remover

you should check out this site where you can get a sony vaio laptop for free
The first thing is what you need? if you need a computer to surf the web download some music, MS office media player and daily work go for a HP, Sony Vaio is excellent but too expensive, so you can go for a HP that is a decent notebook, has a nice price and the most important will do the job.

Other thing is don麓t buy the latest technology because it changes faster than you can imagine so go for something that fill your needs (for example : Intel is much better than AMD but for daily works is almost the same between this to type of processors and you will save a few hundreds bucks that you can spend in memory). About the multifunction (printer, copy and fax) you can get a great deal at bestbuy or circuit city.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...
if you want a vaio, thats fine. But there are many other laptop brands out there that are much cheaper. Some great brands for starting college are asus, and even hp has some good ones. But as for finding them cheaply, newegg.com. Its the greatest

Lenmark is a good printer. Another good one is hp. And for antivirus, norton is the best if you are willing to spend a reasonable amount of money.

Enabling cookies?

While watching Google video,I attempted to rate a video and when I clicked on the 5th star to rate...it flashed up in red letters....must enable cookies to use this feature. I have always been able to rate vids on Google and have not changed anything. How do I enable cookies and why did this change without my knowledge? No one else uses my computer and I have anti-virus,firewall protection, spybot etc. Thank you.

Enabling cookies?virus protection software

To enable cookies, on your browser select tools/ Internet options/Privacy tab/ there is a slide bar that you can use for different settings I like the advanced option click on advanced place a check in override automatic cookie handling. place dot in accept first party cookies and block third party cookies and a check in always allow session cookies. Hope this helps you.

Enabling cookies?adware

Maybe they are just being douchebags today.
sorry thought you had a real cookie prob
This maybe because of spyware. To enable cookies go to tools%26gt; Internet Options%26gt;Privacey%26gt; Click on Default

If this doesn't work slide the bar down to low or turn one of your spyware sofware or anitvirus software
Right click on Internet Explorer on your desktop. On the Privacy tab, select medium-high security. That will allow cookies, but not sell the farm. This usually only changes with new browser installs. Or if you allowed an active-x control to run. Not a good sign.

Help! Probs with Windows Media Player?

Hi, if anyone has any ideas what else I can try...

I can't play any short movies/clips on my computer using Windows Media Player, as I could before. I keep getting an "Internal Application Error" message. I went to Control Panel%26gt;Add/Remove Programs%26gt;Add/Remove Windows Components and removed Windows Media Player, have restarted my computer and then tried to reinstall it, and keep getting the same error message.

I think this started after I had my whole computer formatted and had to start all over again, after some conflict between a couple of Anti SpyWare/Virus Protection applications.

I've tried using Quicktime but that doesnt like .wmv files. Any thoughts appreciated!

**I'm not sure if having iTunes is creating any kind of conflict??

Got a virus, it wont delete, please help!?

I have got a virus on my computer. (Came with a Email)

So i installed ZoneAlarm (Zonelabs.com) and AVG Anti-Virus Free (free.grisoft.com) and i CANT GET RID OF THE VIRUS!

It pops up some notifications in the notification area with some red button and a exclamation mark on it.

Apart from that there are two dialogs, one which is called Windows Security Alert (And the text doesnt seem like ANYTHING microsoft would write), it says "Click here to download spyware remover" and another that says i got a worm blah blah on my system 2000/XP Home/XP Professional/Vista Business.

I am running XP Pro and i have a Vista Ultimate partition (And a Ubuntu Linux)

It also adds three icons to the desktop "Error Cleaner" "Provacy Protector" "Spyware%26Malware Protection"

I just cant get rid of it, AVG has searched 2 (On the third lap right now) on Full, i have removed several Start up items that wherent there before and so on...

What else CAN i do? My system is so slow right now that it is barely useable..

Got a virus, it wont delete, please help!?virus removal

It is spyware masquerading as a security alert. You probably don't have a virus as claimed, just the spyware of the company trying to sell this software to you, it's just claiming you do to scare you into buying their useless software. You, however, are infected by it, so you need to get rid of it.

Grrr my norton as just expired?

i bought a new computer 3 months ago and been using norton anti-virus/firewall protection that was already on my computer from the shop.

ive been really happy with it, but the suscription as just run out, i can still use it, but not protected against new threats.

i don't fancy paying 拢30 to renew it though, is there any tips?

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat...

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).

If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.

If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.

Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

i would forget about norton - as others have said - go with AVG (free version) and SPYBOT (also free) you get all updates free - its quick and very efficient

hope this helps
I used to run Norton and AVG provided by Grisoft (as previously mentioned by phy333 - interesting name - wonder what it means!) side by side on the same system.

How do i get rid of all the stupid pop-ads from vista?

i just got my new laptop and it keeps popping up stupid RANDOM ads from internet explorer and it builds up. i use the internet explore block feature as well as norton anti virus system protection. nothing works. help!

what is the most effective?

How do i get rid of all the stupid pop-ads from vista?virus scanner

those pop-ups are called adware, and it's not internet explorer's fault. anti virus can't stop adware because it's not a virus. you need an anti spyware to remove that thing. i recommend spyware doctor: http://www.2-spyware.com/review-spyware-...

but you can find many anti spyware products online

How do i get rid of all the stupid pop-ads from vista?anti virus software

Vista needs about 50 to 60 Windows Updates before operating properly. Make sure you have Automatic Updates set. I have a new Vista Home Premium and it is set right out of the box to protect with the firewall activated and Windows Defender antispyware (free from Microsoft, good program). Generally, continual pop ups in Internet Explorer is a sign of adware. Windows Defender is the only free program with real time protection (activated in paid subscri[ption security software). It has active shields protecting all parts of the system areas. It would be a rare event that adware installed past their active shields. It is more likely you downloaded some software that was bundled with adware and perhaps even other malware like spyware.

Do I have enough protection on my computer?

I currently run:

1)Norton Anti-virus

2)Norton Firewall

3)Spybot- Search and Destroy

I am quite careful with sites I visit and almost never open any spam emails.

l don't have the quickest computer in the world so I don't want too many programs scanning it at once.

Two questions I'd like answers,

a) Is this enough protection?

b) If I was to add one more program what free program would you add to this list of protection?

Many thanks

Windows Defender reliable??Is it good enough?-Please help.!?viruses

Windows Defender is a good program, it also has real time protction, though i disable that feature and use Spyware Terminator, it's more aggresive, if you want to really be on top of things in regards to your pc, then do these.

Follow these steps and it will remove almost all viruses and malware/spyware from your computer. It will also make your computer run faster.

.

鈥 know this procedure looks long, but much of this is explanatory text to help less experienced people.

鈥lease do not cheat by skipping any steps. You are only hurting yourself if you do. And you will waste more time. The goal is to get your PC fixed. Completing the steps in this generic guide may or may not resolve all of your malware problems, but in all cases it gets your PC into a known state to help make it easier for me to fix your problems. After completing all steps, if you still need help, please send a new question. You may have a problem trying to run steps in safe mode on user accounts that have limited priviledges. This will only be on Windows 2K, XP, %26 2003 systems. Limited user accounts will not show when you boot into safe mode. You have two options, run the steps in normal boot mode which may not work to remove malware, or you can temporarily change the user account to an admin account and then complete the steps.

Do I really need any protection software on my computer?

Really I dont care if I get any viruses infact I reninstall Windows Vista every week! Dont ask why but I just do its almost like a habit! Is it bad for the PC?

Also the reason I dont want any protection utilities is because of my computer performance! I just want to to be and STAY fast! If you can reccommend any ANTI-VIRUS firewall ect. (whatever I need and preferabily one that is free) that will not slow down my computer, I will GREATLY appericiate it! thanks!

if you don't install more program in your computer, it is stay fast . you need an anti virus for protect your computer. I propose Kaspersky. it is the best anti virus , It think.
If you want your PC to stay fast, then you need security software.

Viruses, and spy ware slow down a PC to about 1 tenth of it's performance capabilities.

If you don't mind waiting 10 minutes for your PC to boot up, then don't worry about getting any security software.
If you want your PC to stay fast, then you need security software.

Viruses, and spy ware slow down a PC to about 1 tenth of it's performance capabilities. you can get a 90 day free trial of windows live one care. you do not need a credit card or any thing like that
No, you don't - and I mean that sincerly. As long as you truly do not care if your identity gets stolen (could happen?) or if your computer shuts down and stops working...

Who would be trying to hack into computer?

I think someone is trying to hack into my computer. At least 10 times, I have come home from work and my picture files have been pulled up and/or the AT%26T menu page is up with search and find option open with different coding in the space.

I don't know much about computers. I thought I had good anti virus/spyware protection .

I'm not sure exactly what you are describing, please remember we are not familiar with AT%26T or anything about your computer.

One of my acquaintances put a keystroke logger on their girlfriends' computer to find out if she was in-fact cheating but these are highly illegal in those sorts of situations. It couldn't hurt to run anti-virus scanning to see if you find anything, often one product won't detect everything so use multiple defenses.

There are lots of "family" keyloggers out there that people can install to watch each other pretty easily. I'm not sure that's what you have going on from your description but I hope you find out whats going on.

Udate your antivirus and scan your coputer in safe mode. After you remove virus, I recommend you use firefox browser. It is safer than IE. It can prevent viruses such as worm, trojan and etc. The newest official edition of firefox can be downloaded from http://www.mollzia.com
Have you scanned for spyware? Perhaps your browser has been hijacked by a malicious program. If so dowload a program called Hijackthis. What anti-virus program are you trying to install?

Who knows how to uninstall the Yahoo! Online Protection Software??

i want to install a new anti virus but everytime i go the the Add/REmove programs place, then i go to Yahoo! Applications is not responding" So then i tried deleting all the YOP (yahoo protection) registries because everytime i disabled the antivirus program that comes with yahoo protection, my internet dosnt work. but even though i delete everything that has to do with yahoo protection, my internet still dosnt work. so now i have to stick with this even though i dont want it. and now my internet works because i have the antivirus thing on...any suggestions to uninstall this program?

Who knows how to uninstall the Yahoo! Online Protection Software??abtuvurys 2005

One added bit of information about the free Yahoo online protection. The antivirus and antispyware is provided by Computer Associates. They've been used by Fortune 500 companies for many years. A very reputable and reliable company. You can read more about the antivirus here:

http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/Co...

And the antispyware here:

http://store.digitalriver.com/servlet/Co...

Personally, I don't think any antivirus or antispyware is 100% effective simply because new viruses and spyware are being developed by the minute. But Computer Associates has not failed me so they might prove me wrong. (I paid for CA protection before I got the free online suite when I changed to AT%26T Yahoo.)

first, close any open programs related to yahoo protection.

then go to control panel/add remove programs then remove yahoo

yes, yahoo protection is good you should just be happy and use it.
I have Norton Antivirus. Yahoo, which scans incoming e-mail before opening, does not interfere with it. Why would you want to remove it?

I tried to open what looked like a legitimate link. Thank God, Yahoo stopped me and advised me that it had a worm.

I am grateful to Yahoo.

Computer Virus Problem?adware

These days you need a whole lot more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.

Here's some ideas to make Internet Security Suite (securitycenter) for free. Free is always the best.

--------------------------------------...

1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict...(did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir庐 PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

If Rogers Yahoo operates the same as AT%26T Yahoo, you might not be able to go back. The ISP (Rogers, AT%26T, Verizon, etc) will periodically renew a contract with the security provider. Whatever security package is offered is what the user gets stuck with. You might be able to uninstall what you have and then use this link to get the NAV with firewall:

If this isn't the right package, yo might have to contact Rogers to see if it's still available. There's also a "contact us" link on the Rogers website.

Is there any way you can help me with this "anti-spyware" problem on my computer??

OK there is this balloon that keeps popping up telling me "system performance monitor: warning", saying that I have spyware and adware popup windows installed on my computer. The thing is, I've run both Symantec Anti-Virus and Spybot: Search and Destroy, and they have come up with no threats. So apparently the only "threat" on my computer is this ad that keeps coming up about needing anti-spyware. When I click on Internet Explorer, it now defaults to a security software download page. I've tried going into settings, add/remove programs, and removing whatever this is, but I can't find it and I don't know how to make it go away. There is also now this annoying toolbar at the top of my browser that has these tabs across the top: Protection Bar, Scan for Spyware, Remove Adware and Popups, SPAM Protection, and Security Test. And then this dialogue balloon keeps popping up in the lower right-hand corner about every 15 seconds telling me I need to "click on it and download spyware scan tool."

This is a funny prank to play to people that you know, but to allow someone access to your computer can completely destroy it, as well as allow them access to anything on it. Disconnect your computer from the internet and uninstall whatever he had you install, or your computer is his. Its not a virus per say, as it is a remote access program... many tech support people use this method in business to fix the computer inept staff's tech problems, but removing the program should fix it... worst case scenario, leave it disconnected from the computer, backup your documents and reformat. Better safe than sorry.

How do I repair and reinstall online protection when the software can't do it by itself?

I have online protection however software problems stop it from updating. I have tried to reinstall but it fails. During the anti-virus scan it freezes and I have to reboot. I have erroneous programs on my system but are unable to remove (control panel). I have tried everything I know but I fail at every turn. My system is so sluggish that it is a chore just to navigate. I want to put a bullet into it. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do I repair and reinstall online protection when the software can't do it by itself?antispyware

Try booting into safe mode and running your antivirus again. You may also want to install, check for updates and run the following antispyware applications, also in safe mode. To get to safe mode, tap or hold down the F8 key while the computer starts back up. After a few seconds a screen should appear to allow you to select safe mode. To exit safe mode, simply reboot again afterwards.

Anyone have experience with a virus that hijacks the mouse cursor? It's name? How to get it off

It seems to give the cursor a mind of its own, and Norton anti-virus, Windows defender and the windows Firewall did not catch it!! It also seems to disable any protection software you have or try to download. Is there a "cleaner" type program that I can use to kill it??

Try Avg from grisoft and it is free
my only advice is system restore. it may be too late. go to start, run, type in "msconfig" then choose the system restore button, and follow the directions. there is also a way to get to system restore through the control panel. the system restore restores your computer to an earlier time. try to restore it to the time before the firus
Have you tried another mouse. They go out sometimes. I use a USB optical and it works well
are you sure it's a virus/hacker maybe it's just a dirty mouse, try cleaning your mouse ball or get a new one
Your firewall and virus catcher doesn't seem very reliable. If I were you I'd can Norton and get McAfee. Norton got caught creating viruses and spreading them. This is what I heard. Get and down load at least their virus program. My mouse did that before and I found out it was dirty and had lint , a lot in where the ball turns. Check that out first, because I've never heard of a virus attacking a plug and play mouse. Try a different mouse, too. Maybe that'll help. Clean all your cookies out, Get rid of all your temporary internet files. Use the disk clean up. Clean your history file, too. If you don't know how to do this then get someone who can.

Recommendation on a good anti-spyware/registry cleaner?

I formerly had PC Tools' Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic, but the license has expired on those two and they no longer offer a discount price for getting both programs.

Can you steer me towards something equally good that I should look into getting? I'm looking for protection from spyware, malware, etc.

I'm not locked into getting a Registry cleaner, but would like to.

BTW, I use AVG's updated free version, so I feel I'm covered on the anti-virus front.

Any useful suggestions very much appreciated. Thanks.

alibaba told u the right thing to do, I personally have been using ccleaner for the past so many yrs now, also Ad aware is the other software which cleans the unwanted adwares, registry keys, or spyware. I use NOD 32 as my anti virus software.

I hope u indeed get ccleaner and ad aware as both these softwares r free and easy on the resources, since the softwares r not huge and r very easy to use it makes life much easier. Space consumption is less and hogging on memory is next to nothing, thus will not make ur PC slow either, nice utilities.
If you have windows xp with Service Pack2, you can download Windows Defender. It is a free download from Microsoft.com.

I think my computer has a virus.?

I think it got on my computer from going on some website or something. At first it was just making a bunch of "Spyware Alert" windows pop up, pretending to be something to get viruses OFF of the computer, but I'm not downloading that crap. I've run like ten McAfee VirusScans but it said it didn't detect anything.

Then I just got on my computer after a couple hours and when the desktop came up I saw that it wasn't mine. It was a red picture of a 'radioactivity' symbol, and it was an advertisement that says, "Your Privacy Is In Danger, Download Privacy Protection Software Now." And whenever i click on it it directs me to a website trying to sell anti-virus software.

HOW DO I GET THIS OFF OF MY COMPUTER WHEN MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN DOESN'T DETECT IT?

Please please help.

I think my computer has a virus.?computer protection

Hey Eric,

This is not good. I don't think it is a virus because this is a sign of spyware infection. It more than likely means that a spyware program has changed a value in your registry.

A couple months back, I had a very nasty spyware infection. It completely screwed my computer up, and I thought I was going to have to buy a new computer.

Norton ant-virus ?

Does norton eat up a lot of virtual memory? I've been noticing that I'm a little low on it. Is there an alternative anti-virus program that can be downloaded for free? I would try the AVG, but the free version offers no spy-ware protection.

Norton ant-virus ?antivirus protection

You can go ahead and install AVG 7.5.

Then add Spybot S%26D, Adaware personal, and CCleaner.

All free and use way less system resources.

Norton ant-virus ?computer repair

My advice to you is GET RID OF NORTON.

It is total garbage, the worst antivirus program on the market.

AVG free it a thousand times better, and free too.

There are many free antivirus and anti-spyware programs out there for free that work just fine.

If you don't like AVG then there is always another good one called Avast.

Spyware programs included "Spybot Search %26 Destroy", AdAware, and Ewido, and many others.

Ewido also removes viruses, and I believe it is one of the best. It has recently been taken over by AVG, but there are still downloadable Ewido programs out there. As AVG, Ewido does not work as good as it does under it's own name.
Give Panda a try, www.pandasoftware.com

I have this running on many computers and its not that bad.
Well, I use Panda and never had a problem. If you want to try some of their tools for free go to www.Infected Or Not.com That web site is part of their new campaign "Infected Or Not?" or you can go to http://www.nanoscan.com . They are all part of the same campaign.

There you can try their new products (Panda NanoScan and Panda TotalScan) for free and, in exchange, they collect statistics that are presented in the campaign's website to raise awareness on the malware infection problem.

You should try them, they have more virus definitions than anybody else and they detect all kinds of malware (viruses, trojans, worms, adware, spyware, hacking tools, etc.)

Is it better to buy on line protection or are free downloads just as good?

It's almost time for my anti virus and spyware subscription to expire. I'm not sure if I should renew or just use free on line protection?

Is it better to buy on line protection or are free downloads just as good?antivirus scan

If your a home user: NEVER PAY FOR IT!

I like AVG FREE. The antivirus updates and runs at a time you choose (I do mine when I sleep) and the Spyware works good too.

Is it better to buy on line protection or are free downloads just as good?computer security

AVG is a good choice. Ad-Aware is not exactly an anti-virus however, and it does not monitor your network traffic. Ad-Aware is only good after the fact. It does not prevent anything, it just helps you remove spyware and annoying things of that nature.
Depends what your using, if your using norton, might want to consider a different anti-virus. If you decide to get a free one from offline. Ad-Aware(not to be confused with adware) is a really good one that i use. If you plan on using a subscription anti-virus, Kaspersky is the absolute best there is. Hope this helped.
Its a choice that you must make, but I want you to know that certain FREE programs are just as good as the paid ones. No matter what you choose to do make sure that the one you already have install be removed (uninstall) before installing another one (if it is different from what you already have) Here is a link to a good antivirus program that I recomend and others on this site recomend also. (http://free.grisoft.com) this is AVG free antivirus.

Computer Spyware or Virus?

I have scanned my computer with AVG anti-spyware and Norton and they both didnt show anything wrong. On the bottom left hand corner of the computer (i forgot what the area is called) there is a red x and then it changes to a blue question mark. It just keeps changing and when I click it it says that my computer is infected and that I need to download this virus protection software to fix it (it takes to a site and tells me to download something called "Spycrush", I know that the software is bogus.) This thing always starts up when I turn the computer on. I cant seem to figure out how to get rid of it.

Computer Spyware or Virus?antivirus software

Your computer has a Smitfraud infection.

Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG, Norton, or Spybot S %26 D cannot remove it. A specialised removal tool is almost always needed.

I would use SmitFraudFix for WinXP, Win2K. It's free.

"This tool removes Desktop Hijack malware: AdwarePunisher, AdwareSheriff, AlphaCleaner, Antispyware Soldier, AntiVermeans, AntiVermins, AntiVerminser, AntivirusGolden, AVGold, BraveSentry, MalwareWipe, MalwareWiped, MalwaresWipeds, MalwareWipePro, MalwareWiper, PestCapture, PestTrap, PSGuard, quicknavigate.com, Registry Cleaner, Security iGuard, Smitfraud, SpyAxe, SpyCrush, SpyDown, SpyFalcon, SpyGuard, SpyHeal, SpyHeals, SpyLocked, SpyMarshal, SpySheriff, SpySoldier, Spyware Vanisher, Spyware Soft Stop, SpywareLocked, SpywareQuake, SpywareKnight, SpywareSheriff, SpywareStrike, Startsearches.net, TitanShield Antispyware, Trust Cleaner, UpdateSearches.com, Virtual Maid, VirusBlast, VirusBurst, Win32.puper, WinHound..."

Is Norton online security package & Ad-aware enough protection?

Hiya.I've just changed over to BT Total broadband option 3 %26 i couldn't be happier.I've got the Norton Security package as part of the deal - it has anti-virus, antispyware %26 the firewall all included.I'm also running the latest version of Ad-aware.

I had Spybot S%26D %26 Superantispyware running as well but the BT guy who installed my broadband uninstalled these 2.Apparently Norton running with these can cause conflict %26 aren't needed.

Is Norton online security package %26 Ad-aware enough protection?antivirus

If you have Norotn Online Security. (should include Virus Protector, Firewall, Spam Blocker, etc.) and Ad-Aware you should be fine. But when online shopping, check the website. Look for the https://. Thats httpS:// make sure the S is there in the http://

S makes sure that the website is secured and encrypted. Anything typed there will be gibrish when someone tries to look at it. Also make sure your firewall is on highest setting that also allows internet access

Hello,

You're advised to uninstall Norton and install Avira AntiVir which is free %26 better than Norton.
Free - For starters, download, update and run a full scan using SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) http://www.superantispyware.com/

SAS is an exceptionally easy to use application that will remove the majority of difficult Trojans and Worms, not just the easy ones. In addition it has the ability to remove Vundo and Smitfraud infections. SAS can lock your home page to prevent browser hi-jacking attempts.

If possible it is recommended that you load SAS in normal mode but run it in Safe Mode. Safe Mode can be started by continually pressing F8 during the boot sequence. If you are badly infected you might need to run SAS more than once to help clean your system. Afterwards if the only infections now being shown are in System Restore, once you are completely satisfied that you can boot normally, you can either delete the infected restore points manually, or temporarily turn off System Restore to purge the files.

I'm getting the run-around by Verizon. They offer Norton Anti-virus, force me to uninstall my own antivirus, then Symantec asks for a PIN number, I ask Verizon what that is, get sent to dead end web pages, why is this such an issue? I need a PIN number to ACTIVATE Norton Online Protection. What's the problem?

No body's IP service can force you to remove your antivirus an install their junk. Take Nortons, out which is a pure resource hog and go back an install your own antivirus that you had.

The PIN number has to be the registration key.

Do I need to Upgrade My PC?

Here is what I have;

I bought a Dell Dimension E510 in April 2006.

It came with Windows XP

80BG Hard Drive (have 45GB left)

300Ghz Pentium 4 Processor w/ Hyper Thread

512 MB Memeory

The CD-RW drive is sh*t already, I am wanting to replace it but not sure what to get... I want a DVD-RW/CD-RW Burner combo, if any one has any ideas.

I have added a Radeon 256mb 9250 Graphics card.

I have a lot of Music and photos on the computer and Ages of Empires 3 is one of the biggest added programs on it.

I am wanting to make the computer run faster. It is surprisingly slow. I am currently trying to upgrade my virus protection and anti-Spyware protection.

I am not sure how to get programs out of the start-up folder, it would be great to have help with that, because it is so slow at start-up and shut down.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appriciated. Thank you.

Do I need to Upgrade My PC?avast

The best thing you can do is get some more memory. 512 more would be good, just make sure you get the right kind for your machine.

To stop certain things from starting, click on Start, then Run, then type msconfig. Goto the startup tab and uncheck anything you do not want to run at startup. The best way to really get rid of this stuff is thru regedit but you would want to look at some online guides for that.

What is the best free security program for my computer?

Hello, I have had a Norton 90 day trial and now in 3 days...its going to expire. I didn't want to pay the extra 40 or 30 dollars for a renewel.... but Norton keeps my computer really safe... as i have seen no slow downs yet.

But since i don't want to pay it... I need to get a free one. I was looking at Windows Live One Care (the new one) to be my all around security program to help me protect viruses... get rid of spyware...get rid of slow downs and all that stuff. But I dont know if that is the best security for me...because I never tried it. I have seen people talk about AVG and all those types... but you have to download like 4 of them!! Windows defender being a free product is good. I am using it for about ten days and no problems. It is easily removing spyware. Over all i recommend u to use Defender. Windows Live OneCare i installed about three days ago. You won'y need defender if you install windows live onecare. However it is a 90 day trail. You will have to buy after that. Windows live oncare is faster than Norton. And has a very simple interface. As i am using windows live onecare i am getting addicted to it. Plz try both of them.

Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.

1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)

I like the FREE, AOL ActiveVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. ActiveVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, ActiveVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

Full test results are here:

http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/defa...

ActiveVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Updates many times per day to detect new malware.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 firewall)

Our computors are NOT networked or connected. But whenever I get on my mom's computer I am able to stay online for like three hours before I am bumped off, and it's rare if i ever get bumped off. With my computer I'm lucky if I am on for ten minutes before it bumps me off. We both have norton anti virus and like all the latest spyware and virus protection programs. I mainly use my computor to play the games like the sims. My mom uses hers to do school work and things like that. Why is it that my mom's computer let's me stay on longer than my computer and how can I fix it? will this software protect me if this website wants to do something bad????

not nessicarily, anit virus's merely reduce the possiblities of getting virus's, but it doesn't meen it will prevent anything from happening for sure. but even if a virus did get to your computer, you can use those anti virus programs to repair it, and if that doesn't work, try the system repair option in the control panel under performance and maintainance, it'll bring your computer back to its previous health and statis.

so with all that, i wouldn't worry about it, because accidents could be fixed.

I don't know about all viruses but my AVG has at least warned me before downloading....
Yes. Most antivirus programs usually have real-time protection, meaning, they can monitor everything that's happening on your computer, even access to your computer's registry.

had nothing but bad luck and probs with Norton.

I now use AVGfree. It is free and has been rated one of the best. No problem to download and activate with vista.

Just type avgfree download into your search bar..and you should get the download page. Dont use your laptop without antivirus.

You might have to forget what you paid for Norton disc.

Norton antivirus download help please?hp

get a good anti-virus not Norton it is no good
seacod is correct I have the same and no trouble and it's free.

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...

Make sure you uninstall Norton through Programs%26gt; uninstall, Not through Add or Remove. Restart then install Avast.

Cheers.
you also need a firewall

are you sure its not internet security?

if not get zone alarm also ..

http://www.filehippo.com/download_zoneal...

if it's just the 3 month version , also get avg off file hippo..

Do I need all three?

I have Zone Alarm Security suite on my computer, which I understand is a firewall. Do I also need a seperate anti-virus and seperate spyware? The Zone alarm claims to have virus protection as well as spyware protection. Should I have all three to be safe or is the zone alarm enough? I just had a nasty virus removed from my computer and do not care for it to happen again.

Do I need all three?firewall

ZoneAlarm security suite is all three. You have the firewall..antivirus..antispy. Any more is just overkill.

Do I need all three?husqvarna

I would use all 3 because sometimes when you get a virus or spyware one of the programs will fix it and another will not, this way if you get one you can find which one corrects it.

I recommend windows defender beta 2 as it was the only one that would rid me of a spyware hijacker.
you should have all three, the more protection the better
If you use all of them with zone alarm security , your computer will be slow , be cause zone alarm security has bothe anti viruse and anti spy ware .

Note : Zone alarm is a firewall but Zone alarm security Suite is firewall %26 anti virus %26 anti spyware %26 ...
i think you should stay with only one your pc might start acting upand thats cause you have more than one. in other words

I guess there is no single fully loaded security program that will take care of all current security problems all by itself.

You may need a combination of them or choose the best one to secure your computer.

Install the free AVG anti virus from www.grisoft.com

Or, the free Avira Antivir PE Classic from www.free-av.com

Or, Free antivirus - avast! 4 Home Edition

Or, Free Anti-Virus Protection - Active Virus Shield

Or, do a free online virus scan and clean on www.antivirus.com

The above will take care of your virus problems. Additionally, you may want to install the latest Yahoo toolbar with anti spy button that clean spy which steals your information. Get it from http://downloads.yahoo.com/

Urgent Help Needed Thanks!!!?internet security

in order to solve this problem you would have to send me exactly what the error is saying when you try to delete this file...respond to me at thattdudee@yahoo.com
Boot into safe mode. Disable either one first and try to uninstall. If that doesn't work. Right click on the toolbar at the bottom and open up task manager. Kill the processes that are from the antivirus program. And try to uninstall again.
go to where the antivirus was installed to and find the unistall file. if its not there run something like windows unistall manager (search it on www.windows.com) and see if that works.
If you have Windows XP, boot into safe mode. When asked if you want to do a System Restore, select OK. Pick a date from before the time when he installed the unwanted program, and restore to that date. Any other programs you have added in the mean time will need to be reinstalled but your data will be unchanged.

you should not run two anti-virus programs together it will cause problems, Norton is the best choice because there has been a lot of problems reported with Onecare such as missing viruses.

Never use 2 anti-virus, as they will conflict with each other and cause problems. Uninstall one of them.

NAV or avg free?

hello everyone, i had a question about the virus program im using right now. i was originally using symantec Norton anti virus corporate edition (not sure which version it is, but i think it from around 2003) , but i noticed that every 6 months or so i would get a virus, which would be quarantined but never removed, so i would have to reformat to get rid of it.. also i noticed when i loaded it every test i would run would have a scan omission error, and all the fixes i tried from the company never fixed the error. so i decided to try avg free as my virus protection this time around. my question is, will the avg free provide enough protection for my system (i also run spybot search and destroy for ad/spyware) or should i go back to the NAV and try to get it to work.

NAV or avg free?free spyware

Why pay for NAV when you can use either AVG or Avast for free. They protect the PC just as well or probably better than the NAV or McAfee.

Also, it doesn't hurt to have any spyware/malware utility installed to protect your system.

Also, if you have broadband Internet from providers such as Cox, or Comcast, check their website or call. They provide anti virus applications to their customers for free.

NAV or avg free?live update

Never try Norton Antivirus, it's a system hog, slows down everything. AVG is a good choice, however there are many better and free antivirus than AVG, see it here:

http://avateck.blogspot.com/2008/03/best...

Hope it helps!
Christos, don't PAY for Norton Use Avast! and a good firewall, like Comodo. Norton should pay YOU for the protection they give....

What's a good antivirus to use other than Norton?

I've been using Norton for about 18 months now and I've had 2 virus infections that Norton wasn't able to get rid off. I don't remember how i got rid of the 1st one, but about 2 month's ago I got some virus that Norton pops a "Virus Alert" for [Backdoor.IRC.Aladinz.R] but can't get rid off. I tried removing the virus following the instructions on their site but nothing!

I'm thinking of just reinstalling windows and deleting everything.

Anyway, Norton subscription already expried a couple of weeks ago and I don't plan to renew it or reinstall it. The anti-virus that came w/ Yahoo! DSL didn't work for anything either, it just give virus warnings/alerts but can't remove...

soooo...

do you have any suggestions for any good virus protection and removal software out there? any positive experiences w/ certain antiviruses out there?

Help with Windows Security Center?

Whenever I start up my computer, a little balloon pops up on the taskbar on the bottom right corner of the desktop. It is a Windows Security Alert and says that my computer may be in risk and that I have no virus scan protection.

When I click on the balloon it says in the Windows Security Center under Virus Protection that "%1 reports that it is turned off. etc."

It says that it may not detect all anti virus programs but I have McAfee Security so I do not see why it would not detect it. Is this something I should worry about?

AVG and Norton Anti Spyware?

Ok. .I have AVG free edition on my computer. . also yahoo have Norton Virus Scan via the toolbar. Not knowing too much about technicalities and the running of suh program I am some what confused! Can these two programes work together or do I need to uninstall one? If so which one! Does the Norton cover enough protection for virus etc or is it purely anti spyware?? Please help me! Im female!! (and blonde. . but not that blonde!)

AVG and Norton Anti Spyware?internet security 2006

go the avg website http://www.gristoft.com and download avg professional its 38.99 for 2 years , better then norton and mcafee in combination

AVG and Norton Anti Spyware?microsoft

Avg is a fine antivirus, If I were you, (and thats a stretch) I would eliminate yahoo for google, its more useful and less intrusive. Norton has a large system overhead and running the two together only will slow down your pc. Thats all.

Try microsoft's antivirus, its simple and good.
okay blondie! the answer is yes you can have both. norton-you can set your options to scan for viruses and keep it active and it will tell you if something or someone is trying to put a worm in your computer or if you pick up viruses, then it will either quarantine it or prompt you to do so. if you have avg also; it seems that you can't set it to scan, but you can scan manually and quarantine the problems. you can combine spysweeper and spybot also with the other for a more complete protection. you can set spysweeper to scan. but, it seems to miss certain things. the spybot you have to scan yourself and it seems to pick up traces that the spysweeper will miss. so, in essence it is a good idea to have all four. spysweeper and norton will cost you, and the other 2 you can download for free. hope this helps!
Hon,

Use AVG. It automatically updates to keep you ahead of all the new viruses and is better at finding them. Norton's virus library is slow to update and could put your computer at risk.
I Dont Use Them..I Use A Condom LoL

I need urgent help?

I turn the computer on and it starts to load up this scan called Pest Scan and starts to scan my computer. I think its spy ware so I go in and uninstall it and then decide to install a better anti virus then Symantec Client Security and install CA anti virus.

Then I restart the computer because I notice that my background is gone and I can't get it to come back up. I start to uninstall my old virus protection and find that I can't because my Add and Remove programs window doesn't let me have that option.

Any suggestions?

Hi boss,

Go this site at top right you wil get a free trial of internet security for 60 days, try it get rid of virus.

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/re...

bye..
Considering many factors, I think Norton is the best. Proptecting your PC from virus and spyware is very important. Spending money to buy a good virus scanner is a good investment. It will protect your data and important information.
Comparing Norton and McAfee anti-virus software, i think McAfee is better.
McAffe 10 and update it

Did I just screw up my computer or is it a coincidence...?

that it is running super s-l-o-w, AFTER I put vrus protection on it? My trial virus protection ran out some time ago, and although my pc seemed to be working fine for the most part, I decided to download some free anti virus software. I used Avast, and it prompted me to download a registry cleaner as well, so I did.

Well...... after the registry cleaner scanned and fixed 20 errors, it asked if I wanted to purchase and I opted not to and just put the Avast on. Also I removed some of my un-used programs just to clean up my desk top a bit. Well that was a few days ago, and suddenly my pc seems to have slowed down ALOT. Web pages take forever to load. Also I can't get any videos to play for more than a few seconds. (I watch all my fav shows online at abc.com and mtv.com and such)

Anyway, what could be the problem? Could there be a problem with my internet connection or could it be from one of these AV programs I downloaded or what?

Did I just screw up my computer or is it a coincidence...?internet

did you delete the old av, if not try that. if that doesnt work delete avast and try avg its free and doesnt slow up your computer.

and get rid of that reg cleaner - that might be doing it

Did I just screw up my computer or is it a coincidence...?network

Press Ctl+Alt+Delete and find out what processes are running, you might find why it's so slow that way.
First of all, I don't use Avast so I can't tell you how to go about setting it up. BUT, there's a good chance that it is downloading updates in the background and slowing things down. Even worse, it may be doing an actual virus scan in the background which can really slow things down.
