I have scanned my computer with AVG anti-spyware and Norton and they both didnt show anything wrong. On the bottom left hand corner of the computer (i forgot what the area is called) there is a red x and then it changes to a blue question mark. It just keeps changing and when I click it it says that my computer is infected and that I need to download this virus protection software to fix it (it takes to a site and tells me to download something called "Spycrush", I know that the software is bogus.) This thing always starts up when I turn the computer on. I cant seem to figure out how to get rid of it.
Computer Spyware or Virus?antivirus software
Your computer has a Smitfraud infection.
Almost all "general purpose","all-in one" spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG, Norton, or Spybot S %26 D cannot remove it. A specialised removal tool is almost always needed.
I would use SmitFraudFix for WinXP, Win2K. It's free.
"This tool removes Desktop Hijack malware: AdwarePunisher, AdwareSheriff, AlphaCleaner, Antispyware Soldier, AntiVermeans, AntiVermins, AntiVerminser, AntivirusGolden, AVGold, BraveSentry, MalwareWipe, MalwareWiped, MalwaresWipeds, MalwareWipePro, MalwareWiper, PestCapture, PestTrap, PSGuard, quicknavigate.com, Registry Cleaner, Security iGuard, Smitfraud, SpyAxe, SpyCrush, SpyDown, SpyFalcon, SpyGuard, SpyHeal, SpyHeals, SpyLocked, SpyMarshal, SpySheriff, SpySoldier, Spyware Vanisher, Spyware Soft Stop, SpywareLocked, SpywareQuake, SpywareKnight, SpywareSheriff, SpywareStrike, Startsearches.net, TitanShield Antispyware, Trust Cleaner, UpdateSearches.com, Virtual Maid, VirusBlast, VirusBurst, Win32.puper, WinHound..."
